MADISON, AL (WAFF) - Authorities still aren't releasing the name of the alleged Discovery Middle School shooter.
WAFF 48 News has confirmed the young man's identity through multiple credible sources, but we aren't releasing his name at this time out of respect for the school and the victims of this crime.
Neighbors of the suspect did not want to appear on camera, but said they were aware the young man had behavioral issues.
They're still in shock that this tragic turn of events has hit so close to home.
A 14-year-old ninth grader at Discovery Middle School has been charged with the murder of a classmate during a class change Friday.
"This student, the suspect, knew the victim, he waited for him, he pre-planned it and he shot him," said Madison Police Chief Larry Muncey.
Madison police have not released much information about the young suspect, but neighbors who asked not to be identified said he was troubled.
"He didn't care a whole lot about what was happening to him or his family," one neighbor said.
Several neighbors reported seeing investigators removing items from his family's home on Friday afternoon following the shooting.
One neighbor said a contractor headed to work on her home alerted her to the police presence on her street.
"He said that there were three sheriff's cars down at the end of the street," she said.
"He said maybe that had something to do with the shooting and I said, 'No, no I don't think so.'"
Neighbors said the boy's parents are nice, polite people, who have lived in the neighborhood for at least five years.
"I was just completely in disbelief, I just didn't think this would happen in this community, especially on my street," she said.
Authorities said they are barred by law from releasing the suspect's name because he is a minor.
They won't reveal his identity unless he's charged as an adult.
