Smile, Memphis drivers

Associated Press - December 29, 2009 4:15 AM ET

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Memphis drivers, beware. The warning period is over for the red-light cameras installed at 14 of the city's most dangerous intersections.

The Commercial Appeal reports that the cameras have captured 27,250 "events" on film since Nov. 1, but more than half were rejected after being reviewed by police.

Police say the events are rejected when tags don't match the car or in situations that wouldn't result in a ticket if an officer observed the same thing.

Federal studies have found the cameras can reduce injury collisions by as much as 25 percent.
