Priest dies, had been barred from duties

Associated Press - December 28, 2009 1:15 PM ET

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Paul St. Charles - a Roman Catholic priest who was barred from ecclesiastical duties - has died in Nashville.

Rick Musaccio, the director of communications for the Diocese of Nashville, said St. Charles died Sunday at St. Thomas hospital. He had been in poor health for some time.

A "John Doe" lawsuit was filed against the Diocese of Memphis in August 2008 by a Bartlett man who said St. Charles molested him when the victim was a teenage altar boy at a Memphis church.

St. Charles had been barred from duties in 2004 after earlier complaints.

He had also served churches in Union City and Martin.
