DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - Houston County health officials say a raccoon found fighting with dogs in a residential area has tested positive for rabies.
The Dothan Eagle reports it's the sixth case of animal rabies confirmed by the Houston County Health Department this year.
Homeowners found the animal fighting with neighborhood dogs Monday and asked the health department to test the raccoon. Health department officials said there were no people exposed to the raccoon and the dogs involved had been vaccinated for rabies.
Residents of the area are encouraged to make sure pets are current in their vaccinations and to caution children not to play with or pet wild or stray animals.
