Millions of travelers hitting the road for Christmas

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - The day before Thanksgiving is reserved as the busiest travel day of the year. But this week millions of folks are hitting the road for the holiday.

Officials at Huntsville International Airport said those who will on a flight for Christmas should make sure you remember to keep any gifts you're carrying unwrapped.

Also, they should give themselves extra time to make sure they don't miss that flight, just in case the airport gets busy.

More than four million people are expected to fly. But about 88 million people will be traveling, according to AAA. That means it should be a bit busier on the road.

AAA associates WAFF 48 News spoke with said most local drivers who are hitting the road for the holiday will be driving these last two days before Christmas, hoping to avoid traffic and in some cases, severe weather.

Meteorologists say you can expect storms in the west and Midwest.

As for gas prices, expect to pay up. Right now, the national average for unleaded regular gas is $2.58, up from $1.66 last year. In Alabama, the average is $2.45 and here in Huntsville, about $2.49.

But whether you're driving or flying, remember-- be patient. No one likes a Grinch at Christmas!
