CITRONELLE, Ala. (AP) - An 11-year-old boy has died after becoming trapped under a 25-foot section of rock that fell on him as he was playing by a roadside near Citronelle.
Officials say rescuers worked feverishly to rescue Daniel Gartman but it was later determined he died in the accident late Tuesday morning.
Mobile Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Randy Smith said a second child who was playing on top of the boulder while Gartman was below was not injured.
The Press-Register reports emergency crews were called to the scene around 11:45 a.m. and used hand tools to dig below the rock.
The boy's mother was at the scene and notified when his body was recovered.
