GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -  Neighbors in Marshall County raced to their doors. One neighbor yelled across the street to her friend, "God's so good! Open up that door honey, they're passing out hams!"

A few volunteers carried a small white box to each doorstep. Inside was a gift many families couldn't afford this Christmas.

About 350 hams and canned vegetables were purchased by Boaz businessman Davis Lee. The meal is being delivered two days before Christmas for families that are less fortunate.

Jimmy Miller came to the door with a big smile on his face, saying, "It made me happy, because I don't even have a tree this time. So it made me happy."

Robbie Kling said he is thankful because he's faced some tough times lately.

"It's real great, because I've been out of a job for a year and stuff and it's been hard for us to get food. It really means a lot," Kling said.

Jeff Tilley was woken up by the knocking at the door was pleasantly surprised.

"I think it's wonderful," Tilley said. "It's wonderful to live here and know God cares and God's got people to take care of people."

Jackie Moore said she's "Grateful, very grateful. It makes me feel very grateful."

Walter Moore was outside of his door, waiting anxiously.

"Very happy, because I didn't have anything this Christmas," he said.

Guntersville police officers and Housing Authority workers volunteered their time to hand out the dinners.

"It's a good gesture," said Lt. Mike Turner. "Especially the times we're going through right now. Some of the families we encountered, this is what they're going to have this Christmas. Exactly what we gave them."

A selfless gesture that is a Christmas gift the families in Marshall County are thankful for.
