HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Santa's getting some help in preparation for his big night, thanks to the help of some special elves at the Huntsville post office. They're busy sorting letters and making sure those letters get to the North Pole for Santa to read.
One letter, from a boy named Blade, began with, "Dear Santa, please come [Dec.] 23, because my dad has to work Christmas Day.
It's one of many special requests that the "elves" at the Huntsville post office see every Christmas as they sort, then ship, letters from good little boys and girls.
Santa's helpers at the post office make sure those letters get to the North Pole with a proper return address so Santa can anwer them.
"Probably 90 percent of the letters is, 'I want a new bike, or train or XBox," said Acting Postmasteranswer Vess.
Vess said Huntsville postal workers get hundreds of letters each year from all over north Alabama.
"Scottsboro, Bridgeport, Florence, AL," he said.
But Vess said that this year's letters show more children in need. Many of the letters coming through the post office this year deal with the down economy, and Christmas wishes for financial help for their families.
"As for me, all I want is for my family to be happy," wrote one child.
"You get some that make you cry, some that make you laugh," Vess said.
As another child asked, "P.S. I want to know if your reindeer are all girls or boys."
