KINGSPORT, Tenn. (AP) - A Sullivan County grand jury has cleared a Kingsport police officer of any criminal wrongdoing for the fatal shooting of a pit bull.
Officer Darrell Johnson shot the dog June 21. Police said at the time officers were chasing two suspects when Johnson crossed a low wire fence, encountered three dogs and shot and killed one after an unsuccessful attempt to retreat.
Witnesses disputed some of the police account, saying no dog charged the officer and that just one dog was involved.
According to the Kingsport Times-News, Sullivan County District Attorney Greeley Wells received a final report on the incident from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. He had asked them to investigate the day after the shooting.
