HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - It's being called "Climategate " - the leak of about a thousand emails between several of the world's leading climate scientists. They're emails that a Huntsville climatologist said show a clear bias against global warming skeptics like himself.
Dr. John Christy of UA Huntsville is named in about 50 of these emails. Christy is also Alabama's state climatologist. He said these e-mails are proof that the gatekeepers in his field have been making efforts to downplay his findings.
With the United Nation's biggest climate change conference underway in Denmark, the climate change community is facing a scandal of epic proportions.
One thousand leaked e-mails, ranging as far back as March of 1996 to just about three weeks ago, between leading climate scientists at the Hadley Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in England.
The emails didn't have very positive things to say about Christy and other well-known global warming skeptics.
"What these e-mails show is that there was a concerted effort it's pretty clear to delay our publications or deny them," he said.
Christy is director of the Earth System Science Center at UA Huntsville. He said he and his team have found their data does not support the widely held view that greenhouse gases are accelerating global warming.
"They don't want the information to come out that the climate is changing much more modestly than is being promoted," Christy said.
In an attachment to one of the e-mails, Christy and several colleagues are pictured on a melting "Gilligan's Island" while denying global warming exists.
Christy said he feels vindicated now that these e-mails have been exposed.
"I think there will be a closer look at the kind of things we publish and do because it's pretty evident that the establishment has tried to repress and suppress it," he said.
