HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Jobs and the economy were the focus of a free workshop for job seekers on Thursday.
Two non-profit groups came together to help participants get a leg up on the competition. Organizers called it a success.
Sixty people registered for it, and 100 showed up to the get the inside scoop on landing a job in Madison County.
Like millions of Americans across the country, Marilyn Jolly of Harvest is looking for a job.
"It has been a little difficult, but you keep hope alive and you keep doing what you have to do and stay out here," Jolly said.
She did that by attending the free job search panel and networking session organized by Connect Class 10 and HandsOn Greater Huntsville, Madison County's volunteer center.
"The emphasis is really on networking. It is such a key and critical part of finding a job here in Huntsville. It is all about who you know," said Tina Gess, a volunteer at HandsOn Greater Huntsville.
Gess said the session is opening up participants to ways they can make themselves more marketable.
"Maybe some opportunities that they wouldn't have tried otherwise, like using volunteer opportunities to network and to build their resumes," she said.
Connect Class 10 is a group of young professionals who are involved in the community.
Member David Little said he's sharing what he's learned as someone who's bounced back after being laid off.
"For me, it was networking and advertising my loss, people got to know, have to know that you're looking for a job," he said.
It's advice that Jolly took to heart.
"Networking will probably be one of the things that I'll be doing now," she said.
Organizers said they hope to make the event more frequent, with industry specific panels.
