GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) – The Marshall County Drug Enforcement Unit arrested a gynecologist in Guntersville on multiple drug charges.

Dr. Jason Hunt was arrested late Tuesday night near Highway 69 in Marshall County after an investigation that involved several agencies on the city, county and state levels.

Hunt was charged with possession of a controlled substance, including methamphetamine and Lortab, along with two counts of distribution of several controlled substances.

Hunt is a gynecologist and his office is located in the Marshall Medical Center Plaza which is located on the medical center's property.

The Alabama Board of Medical Examiners said Hunt has only had his medical license in the State of Alabama since August of 2008.

His arrest came as a shock to the whole community, including his patients.

"I was shocked because I didn't expect it from him," said one.

"We've been involved in looking at the practice in which medicine is prescribed by him and whether it was for a legitimate purpose," said Marshall County District Attorney Steve Marshall.

Marshall said Hunt is being held on $160,000 bond. The bond conditions require Hunt to be drug tested for the period of time he's out of jail and waiting for his case to go to trial.

Hunt also has travel restrictions because he has an out of state address. He cannot go back on hospital grounds.

But the arrest concerns Hunt's patients.

"It makes me worried," said one patient to WAFF 48 News, who requested to remain anonymous.

The patient WAFF 48 News talked to had been under Hunt's medical care for a year. She said she'll be finding another gynecologist now.

"Knowing this has happened...[I won't] go to him," she said.

WAFF 48 News called the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners to ask Hunt's medical practice status. They said they will discuss the investigation in mid-December. They will know more about what to do at that meeting.

Marshall Medical Center declined to comment but said Hunt has been suspended pending this investigation.
