FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) - Even with the holidays on the brain, many in North Alabama are still thinking of the H1N1 virus.
Students returning to school in the Shoals will have the vaccination waiting on them.
Some students in the Lauderdale County school system and Florence schools can prepare for their long awaited H1N1 vaccination this week.
Students in grades K-3 at Waterloo, Underwood and Cloverdale elementary schools and Forest Hills in Florence will start their clinics Monday.
A few more schools throughout Lauderdale county will begin their vaccinations later in the week and next week.
Only students with parental consent will receive their first round of the nasal spray vaccine.
A second dose will be given to students sometime after the Christmas break to ensure immunity.
Students allergic to eggs or who have asthma and any other health conditions can not get the vaccine.
State health officials and school leaders are encouraging parents to get their children vaccinated.
"If parents are considering getting their child vaccinated, now would be the time to do it," said Superintendent Kendy Behrends.
Healthcare officials say the vaccine is painless and it is harmless and can protect students from H1N1.
Health officials say travel to other states and more people gathering for the holidays could increase the risk of passing the virus.
