GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) –One Guntersville soldier is among the few back home with his family this Thanksgiving.

It takes about 5 days to make it from Afghanistan back to the United States, but Captain Rothfeldt says its worth every minute.

June 24th, we first introduced you to the Rothfeldt family.

A crowd of around 40 people gathered at the old harbor in Guntersville, to say their goodbyes as Captain Morris Rothfeldt headed to Afghanistan.

It was an emotional day for his wife Cindy and their two daughters Ilyssa and Abigail.

Their husband and father was expected to return home in 9 months.

It's been just a few months, and Captain Rothfeldt is among the lucky ones, he's back home for the holiday.

"Since I've been home, we did a little shopping this morning.  Seeing family and friends and just really relaxing," say Captain Rothfeldt.

Rothfeldt is on leave and has 15 days of rest and relaxation until he has to return back to Afghanistan.

But Rothfeldt is enjoying every minute. "It's a great motivational boost. It tough being away from family and friends. But its a great solice knowing I can come home and see them, spend some time with them. It will make the last four months I have over there easier."

Wife cindy says the last few months have been difficult.  "It was really hard at first adjusting to him being gone, knowing he was so far away. Just him being able to have any time off is a blessing."

A blessing that the Rothfeldt family will always be thankful for.

"I am thankful for my family, all the people that supported me and my family during my absence. We have it really well here in the United States and that's something we should all be thankful for," say Captain Rothfeldt.

Rothfeldt is returning to Afghanistan next Thursday and will stay through Christmas. He took his leave now, so younger soldiers can have that time off with their families.
