GERALDINE, AL (WAFF) - One person was found dead after a log cabin fire in Geraldine late Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Geraldine Volunteer Fire Department, the blaze started at a home on Highway 75 on the backside of the Oak Hill Trailer Park.
Geraldine, Crossville, and Kilpatrick fire departments arrived at the scene around 2:45 p.m.
"It was blazing up there about 30 feet and you couldn't get there within about 100 feet, it would burn you," said neighbor Johnnie Walker.
Walker and others said they called 9-1-1, and crews arrived shortly after.
"Half the house was engulfed and it was getting worse," said Walker.
The blaze continued to burn into Wednesday night.
"They'd get it down about two or three times and it would just blaze back up," Walker explained.
Firefighters and investigators remained on the scene for several hours before finding a body at the back door of the cabin.
"We had received a call that the owner of the house was supposedly in the house, an elderly man 70-72 years old," said DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris.
Sheriff Harris said Bobby Johnson died in the fire.
Walker said he's known Johnson since he moved next door.
"I've known him for about ten years," he said.
Sheriff Harris said there will be an autopsy and a full investigation is underway to determine the cause of death.
