MONTEVALLO, AL (WAFF) - A University of Montevallo freshman who was a graduate of Sparkman High School was killed Monday night in a car crash.
Amy "Amie" K. Elliott, 18, of Madison died in the wreck on Highway 119 in Montevallo near Cobblestone Apartments about 7:30 p.m.
A spokeswoman for UM said four other students were injured, and at least two of them remained hospitalized Tuesday morning. They are sophomore Logan Arrowood of Phenix City, freshmen Joseph and Stephen Billy, both of Brewton, and sophomore Eonna Chambers of Birmingham.
Elliott was an elementary education major. A remembrance ceremony for her will be held on Monday at 4:30 p.m. on Tutwiler Quad for students, faculty and staff members.
At Sparkman High, Elliott was a member of the choir, the golf club and did theatre. Sparkman theatre director Sherri Ryan said the drama students are a very tight knit group and are taking the loss very hard.
"Everything she did, I mean, her smile, her excitement, her enthusiasm, it would just pervade the whole group," Ryan said.
Ashley Gilliland has lost more than a dear friend.
She is trying to wrap her mind around the death of Amy, a friend she has known since they were two years old.
"I'm just really shocked, I'm upset. I'm not really sure how to take it and it's really hard," said Gilliland.
The loss will linger especially because Gilliland, who is getting married next year, has also lost not only her friend, but also her maid of honor.
"She was just a really good friend and I'm really going to miss her," she said.
A memorial service will be held for Elliott on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Holmes Street United Methodist Church in Huntsville.
Montevallo Police Chief Steve Holt told WAFF 48 News that multiple agencies are investigating the accident and that he's not ready to release a cause.
