Hometown sends Grundy family to meet president

Associated Press - November 14, 2009 10:55 AM ET

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - A Tracy City youngster nicknamed Mr. President got his wish to meet the real "Mr. President" thanks to a fundraising blitz by generous people in his community.

The family of 11-year-old Kory Short met President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama at a White House screening of the movie "Where the Wild Things Are" earlier this month.

Kory, who uses a wheelchair because of muscular dystrophy, has wanted to meet a U.S. president since learning about President Franklin Roosevelt, who also was disabled.

His friend Marissa Caldwell wrote a letter to the president describing Kory's wish, and the White House soon responded with the invitation.

Grundy County residents raised more than $5,000 in a day and a half to ensure the Short family could go to Washington.
