JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men’s basketball team inked junior college guard Derick Denny on Wednesday as part of the Gamecocks’ early signing period, second-year head coach James Green announced.

Denny, a 6-foot-4 guard at Kansas City Kansas Community College, signed a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday and will join the Gamecocks for the 2010-11 season, joining what should be an experienced-laden roster at JSU in Green’s third season.

“We are excited to add Derick to our basketball program,” Green said. “Derick has been very loyal to our program throughout the recruiting process. He brings a maturity level and work ethic that fits well with our team make-up. He had a very successful freshman year, and we look forward to his continued growth as an individual and as a player.”

That freshman year saw Denny lead KCKCC in scoring with 12.6 points per game and rank atop the Jayhawk Conference with 108 3-pointers made, the most in a single season in KCKCC history. The Green Bay, Wis., native also averaged 2.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game, while shooting .449 from the floor and .450 from behind the arc last season for the Blue Devils.

Early in his sophomore campaign, Denny is averaging 19.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game for the Blue Devils. Last week, he went 14-for-22 from behind the arc to lead KCKCC to a pair of wins.

“Derick is currently sixth on our school’s career 3-pointers made list and is well on his way to easily breaking the record 190,” Jon Oler, head coach at KCKCC said. “He is the best shooter I have ever had, and he also has the best motor. His ability to get open and get shots off really sets him apart from the other guys that have played for me. Along with his work ethic and his desire to get better, we are hoping that Derick will lead us to another 20-plus win season.”

Denny prepped at Seymour High School in Seymour, Wis., where he averaged 15.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists to lead SHS to a 16-4 record and a second-place finish in conference action. Along the way, he picked up Team MVP, first-team all-conference and honorable mention all-state accolades for his efforts.
