HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - The 2009 Veterans Day Parade in downtown Huntsville was a success. From music, to cheering, to flags flying, thousands showed thanks to the men and women who have put their lives on the line for what Americans have today.
"I come out every year," said Navy veteran David Brunhoeber.
"I just wasn't going to miss the opportunity to honor our veterans," said onlooker Laura Eden.
Pride packed downtown Huntsville. Children hold their flags high for heroes past.
"To my grandpa," said Tommy Lau. "He used to be a veteran."
Veterans have been the focus of talk at school.
"I learned that they help our country and they fight for us," said Jack Curry.
Active members of the military came out to support their colleagues and those who paved the path before them.
"It means the world to me, because without the [non-commissioned officers] and the leaders from the past, we would not have the guidance and ration to know exactly what to do," said active Army soldier Daniel Smith.
"Without them we wouldn't have what we have today," said active Army soldier Broderick Nelson.
At the same time, an older generation honored a newer one.
"It's an honor to watch these young soldiers and stuff like, it's an honor to serve," said one vet. "It's a blessing I made it back home safe and I'm praying for them."
"I'm a veteran, so I served my time already," said another. "I'm here to support those who still are in the military."
Specialist Tom Brown is a Vietnam reenactor but also a real Vietnam veteran. He said he wants this day to also be about the hero at home.
"Any soldier, sailor, airman, Coast Guard, Marine had a mother," Brown said. "That person was touched by teachers, neighbors, by their priests, all kind of these and made them all they could be and then when they served their country they demonstrated how good they were."
"If it wasn't for my family, I would not be able to do what I've been able to do," Smith said.
