LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- A man convicted of murdering a Florence woman in 1988 has been denied parole.
The Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles denied David D. Whitson's parole petition Tuesday.
Whitson was convicted of killing Deborah Elaine Ragland Bates at her home in Florence. Her head was nearly severed in the assault.
Bates' brother, Bennie Ragland of Florence, gave the parole board a petition with 251 signatures of people in his community who want whitson to remain in prison.
Ragland said his sister lived just long enough to call family members for help after the attack.
