HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - The news of Fort Hood has shocked many across the country and especially those in the Tennessee Valley from servicemen at Redstone Arsenal to wounded warriors who've served their country proudly.
Thirty of our nation's heroes were in town and many shared their thoughts on the tragedy at Fort Hood.
As Veterans Day quickly approaches, many can't help but to think of those who loss their lives at Fort Hood.
Dozens of wounded warriors converged in Huntsville to reminisce and share stories, but even at this joyous occasion their comrades at Fort Hood are fresh on their minds.
They know all too well the price you can pay for defending the country.
Former Marine, Johnathan Crow was wounded after an accidental explosion at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri.
"Five years ago, I woke up out of a bed, tubes in my body, bandages on my head going God where am I, someone please help me," said Crow.
"It's very sad that man or people did that to all those innocent bystanders. It's a sad, sad thing for this world," he continued.
Sadness has also turned into anger
"When you have one of your own commit an atrocity like that. it's sad, you pray for the families," said Marine Matt Fleming.
Many servicemen at Redstone Arsenal are still reeling from Thursday's shootings.
General Jim Myles said the entire post is mourning the loss of what is considered the worst attack at a US military base.
"It doesn't matter if it was a soldier that has done something, a civilian or the enemy," he said. "We grieve the loss of the 13 people, 12 soldiers, one civilian that we have lost here and it is something that never gets any better regardless of who has done it."
The general was able to confirm all 90 department army civilians and contractors from Redstone stationed at Fort Hood have been accounted for, as well as hundreds more scattered throughout smaller bases in Texas.
