HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A suspicious package prompted a lockdown at Huntsville's Columbia High School.
Several parents emailed and called our newsroom wanting answers as to why no one was allowed on or off campus.
Keith Ward with the Huntsville City School System and Huntsville police say that a school resource officer found a suspicious box in the parking lot of Columbia High School.
The school was put on immediate lock down. Officers checked the package and determined it was a plastic battery box with nothing explosive found inside.
Students were not allowed to leave the building and no one was allowed inside for the duration of the lock down.
Ward says even though the situation turned out to be nothing its still treated as a valuable learning tool.
"All of the schools have a safety plan in palce depending on the incident that might occur they have a procedure in place it does help get practice and focus in on that to make sure things run like they need to work," said Ward.
Once the situation was deemed safe, the school's lockdown was lifted.
