Lawrence County adding special victims unit

Posted: Updated:

MOULTON, AL (WAFF- Two new deputies will make up a new special victims unit for the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office.

The new unit will focus on domestic violence, child abuse and sexual crimes involving women and children.  In addition to those crimes, investigators Christopher Waldrep and Adam Lentz will also handle registration and monitoring or all sex offenders.

Both investigators with the special victims unit have already been closely involved with investigations involving children because of their involvement with the Lawrence County Drug Endangered Children Program.

Sheriff Gene Mitchell says the new unit specialized focus will allow other criminal investigators to focus on other types of crimes.

The new unit was made possible through funding from the Alabama Department of Economical and Community Affairs by way of the Violence Against Women Act.
