HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - One breast cancer survivor is on a mission to bring comfort to others battling the disease.

One cap at a time, Carla Merrill is hoping to make a difference.

"When I started losing my hair, I needed, I saw patients coming in and needing hair coverings and things like that," Merrill said.

Now that she's gotten a clean bill of health, she's using her newfound energy to collect head coverings, like caps, hats and scarves for cancer patients.

"It's bold, it's gorgeous. It would make a great turban," Merrill said of one scarf.

To date, she has collected and delivered more than 400 items.

"You make yourself look beautiful," she said.

Friday, she made a delivery to Clearview Cancer Institute in Huntsville.

"Thank you so much for giving this to us. Our patients will be very thankful," said Emily Garnett, a social worker at CCI who accepted the delivery.

"Well they need it and I'm glad that I'm here to help them," Merrill responded.

Merrill also has drop off points set up in San Diego, Las Vegas and Portland, and she's not stopping there.

"I want New York, I want Chicago. I want Florida. I want every state in the union and every place there's a cancer treatment," Merrill said.

You can help keep Merrill's mission alive by donating hats and scarves for the cause.

There's a drop off point at the Century 21 office on Highway 72 West in Madison.
