FALKVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A local 5th grader was suspended for allegedly bringing a small, homemade bomb to Falkville Elementary School in Morgan County.
WFF 48 News was told the alleged bomb was three firecrackers taped together with a copper wire to connect to a possible ignition device. The police chief said the 12-year-old was suspended until a school board hearing.
The boy's mother, who asked to remain anonymous, said she works hard to raise him and believes the controversey has been blown out of proportion.
"He did not put anything in that would actually go off," she said. "There were no batteries, there was no ignition, there was no nothing..he didn't have anything to light it with."
She said her son is unhappy and didn't know he was doing anything wrong.
"He was really scared," she said. "He didn't think about how he could have hurt someone else or himself because to him it was a toy. Didn't realize it could have even hurt anyone. To him it was like a firecracker blowing up."
Friends of the family who watched the boy grow up agreed. Paula Wisener said he's a good kid.
"I think that it is just a child that is very intelligent," Wisener said. "That was experimenting, that was learning how to do something and i think he was glad to learn it. I don't think that he meant any harm. I don't think he intended any harm."
Another friend, April Leverett, couldn't believe it.
"It was shocking," Leverett said. "I never thought and dreamed that he would. This would happen to him in any way. I love that little boy to death, and he is just, you know....this shocked me."
Police and schools weren't taking any chances allowing any student to possibly get hurt. The Faulkville Police Department started the investigation at the school. Later the Alabama Bureau of Investigation came on board.
