COURTLAND, AL (WAFF) - Lawrence County residents are watching the sky and the waterways, worried about flooding. In fact, county schools dismissed early Wednesday as a precaution.

The Big Nance Creek in Courtland is always a major area of concern. Often, homeowners move to higher ground during heavy rainfall.

The Town Creek area is actually the backwater of Big Nance Creek. It's an area where locals go to fish and dig worms. But now the water is moving quickly and slowly rising.

When there is too much rain, it jumps the banks like it did in 2008. When this happens, locals move cars, furniture and anything else they want to keep away from the water.

"It will flood this whole side of town here," said resident Jerome Cross. "It will get all the way around this house here. It used to [go into houses.] Most people build their houses up that live on this side of town."

On Wednesday, people were visiting the area not to fish, but to look at the floodwaters.
