FLORENCE, AL (WAFF)  The Shoals is known for music.  Many popular songs were written and recorded in the area.

The University of North Alabama is in its third year of helping its students learn how this industry works.

They are looking for an undiscovered artist to sign.

The studio is state of the art. The sound is crisp and clear. The knowledge learned in the recording studio on campus is priceless.

"When you actually get your hands on material," said Thomas Smith, an Entertainment Industry major at UNA, "on the equipment, that is when you really start to learn things."

"At least you don't feel lost," said Haley Howell, an Entertainment Industry major at UNA.

"When you get out there, you feel like you've done something," she continued.

These students at the University of North Alabama are part of the Entertainment Industry Department.

The university has its own record label, Singing River Records.

Each year, they find an artist to sign, and then the students get hands on experience recording and marketing the artist.

"They have to make those everyday decisions that any business will make," said Dr. Bob Garfrerick, Department of Entertainment Industry Chair.

The students are still in need of this year's artist.

They are taking demos until Friday.

You do not have to be a student to apply, but they would like someone local and has some experience performing.

"I'm working on getting contracts and releases from this year's artist," said Thomas.

"Once we find the person," said Howell, "we will produce their album."

Professors in the department feel this hands on experience is invaluable, and it will really help them when they leave college.

"They tell me that it has been a very helpful situation to have done it," said Garfrerick.

If you are interested in being signed to Singing River Records, you can drop off your demo at the Entertainment Industry Department office or call 256-765-4369.
