LITTLEVILLE, AL (WAFF)  If it was not for the keen eyes of a state trooper, 20-year-old Jessica Pace of Tuscumbia, may have never been found.

Pace was involved in a one vehicle accident on Highway 43 in Colbert County, just north of Littleville.

The state trooper noticed tire tracks leaving the roadway down a steep embankment.

Pace's Dodge Intrepid was crushed in the accident.  She was found inside her vehicle shortly after 8 a.m. Friday.

"Ran down the hill." said Alex Polasky, a Littleville volunteer firefighter who was one of the first on the scene, "Got to the car, and she was hanging halfway out."

Polasky was not on duty, but just happened to drive by the scene.

"She was just mumbling, and I got her name out of her," said Polasky.

Investigators are still trying to figure out the cause of the crash.  They do believe Pace had been in her vehicle for most of the night.

Her car was hidden behind thick brush. A piece of guardrail was lodged in the driver side door.  Investigators are trying to figure out where that came from, there was no guardrail where Pace's car left the road.

"We couldn't get it out till we pulled the car up," said Littleville Fire Chief M. C. Burleson.

Burleson said he thinks the guardrail came from an old construction job. He said this is not the first time a car has left the road here.

"It's common for us," said Burleson.

The stretch of the highway is under construction because of several fatalities early in the year.  The highway is being repaved and guardrails are going to be added.

Burleson said he just hopes drivers will slow down so future accidents can be prevented.

Jessica Pace was transported to ECM Hospital in Florence.  She was later flown to Huntsville, and is listed in critical condition.
