PHIL CAMPBELL, AL (WAFF)  Franklin County investigators are still trying to find the suspect who shot at a Phil Campbell police officer early Friday morning.

The shooting happened at the Phil Campbell Pharmacy located at the intersection of Highway 237 and Hardin-Hester Drive.

The pharmacy's alarm went off shortly after 5 this morning, alerting police.  When Phil Campbell Police Officer, Ewell Turner, arrived on the scene he saw the front door busted in and a suspect inside.

Turner ordered the suspect to come outside with his hands up.

"At that time," said Merrell Potter, Phil Campbell Police Chief, "The suspect raised up from over behind the counter and fired several rounds, from what we believe to be a 45 caliber automatic pistol."

Turner was able to take cover, and avoided being hit.  His patrol car was not so lucky.

He immediately called for back-up, but the suspect was able to escape through the back, and run into the woods.

"We are regrouping," said Potter, "Going to have some details go into the woods and try to comb the area."

K-9 dogs were brought in, but lost the suspect's trail.  The suspect is described as a white man, wearing a gray hoodie.

This is not the first time the Phil Campbell Pharmacy has been burglarized.

"It's the second time this week," said Bart Gillis, who works at the pharmacy, "It's been attempted."

On Tuesday, the front door was also broken into, but the alarm scared off the intruder.  Owners of the pharmacy are planning to do more to stop break-ins.

"We are going to up grade the doors to steel and concrete," added Gillis.

Phil Campbell Pharmacy has been broken into at least 10 times.  They already have taken several safety measures, including an alarm system, motion lights, and bars on the windows.

Phil Campbell schools were on lock down for most of the day.

If you have any information on this shooting, you are asked to contact the Phil Campbell Police Department at 205-993-5313.
