SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF) A 30-year-old man from Lincoln, Alabama is accused of having sex with a 12-year-old girl from Sheffield.
Investigators say he meet the girl on a telephone chat line.
Sheffield Police were first notified Friday that a 12-year-old girl had gone missing from her grandparents. She had left a note saying she would be gone for a year.
"Started to get her cell phone records," said Greg Ray, Sheffield Police Chief, "Seeing some places where she would have called recently."
The records showed several calls to Lincoln, Alabama. They used those numbers to find the victim.
"We got a call from the Lincoln Police Department that they had located her at a truck stop," said Ray.
30-year-old Jeremiah Spiracos, a Lincoln resident, was charged with 2nd degree rape.
Sheffield police have also charged him with interference with custody and enticing a child.
Spiracos and his sister-in-law are accused of picking up the victim in Sheffield, and driving 3 hours back to Lincoln.
"There is a lot of predators out there," said Pam Flemming, a Sheffield resident who has 2 daughters near the victim's age, "Its a very scary world for our kids."
Flemming says parents always need to know who their children are communicating with.
"I know the code for the telephone to unlock the phone," she said, "I know the code for her voicemail."
She also has a rule where her daughters are not allowed to delete text messages.
"If a child is deleting text messages, then they are hiding something," Flemming said.
"A child has some rights to privacy," added Ray, "But there is nothing wrong with being a concerned parent."
Two Sheffield Police officers went to Lincoln and brought the victim home.
Eventually, the suspect will be brought back to Sheffield to face charges. Charges are pending against his sister-in-law.
