HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- The city of Huntsville moved one step closer to requiring businesses who do work with the city to check employee names and social security numbers.
A proposal for the city to use E-verify has been introduced.
We first told you about the idea of E-verification in late July, now it's just two weeks away from a possible vote.
E-verify is a national database on-line that could limit public frustration with illegal immigration. The program is a verification system set up through the Department of Homeland Security.
The internet-based system allows employers to search and see if their worker is a U.S. Citizen.
The proposal was introduced at Thursday night's Huntsville City Council meeting, and would require businesses that do work with the city of Huntsville to use the E-verify program.
There was no discussion or vote on this proposal Thursday, but it's expected to come up again in two weeks. If it passes then, the ordinance would only start with new contracts or renewal of existing city contracts after January first of 2010.
