MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) - State Troopers issued more than 16,000 traffic citations during the week-long Take Back Our Highways campaign which ended July 31.
Troopers launched the crackdown in an effort to reduce the number of fatalities on Alabama highways in the late summer.
For the week, State Troopers investigated 11 fatality crashes. Those deaths were reported in Colbert, Lauderdale, Limestone and Marshall Counties in North Alabama as well as in seven other Alabama counties.
The 11 fatalities are seven fewer than for the same time period in 2008.
Enforcement totals for the week included 7,657 citations for speeding, 2,862 for seat belt/child restraint violations, 185 for DUI, 182 for following too closely and 124 for improper lane change.
