HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Money's tight for many people this Fourth of July, but benjamins are filling cash registers at fireworks stands across north Alabama.
The Fireworks business is booming, literally.
People are walking out with bagfuls of those noise-makers that light up the sky every Fourth of July.
For many children, the Fourth of July can be just as exciting as waiting for Christmas.
"I'm buying fireworks and just can't wait for item" said 8-year-old Nate Drinkard.
From sparklers to artillery shells, decisions on what to take home can be overwhelming.
Willie Harris, 10 of Huntsville, says the biggest firecrackers are the ones that catch his eye.
Many parents were out spending this holiday weekend.
A lot of retailers assumed the recession might put a dent in their revenue.
Regardless of the slow economy, the Fireworks Supercenter off University Drive in Huntsville is getting a big bang for its buck.
"Every year our sales seem to be up and this year is no exception" employee Shane Manasco told WAFF 48 News.
"This is actually the first year I've bought fireworks in 15 years," said Ken Warriner.
Every sale makes a difference at a stand at the intersection of Wall Triana Highway and Capshaw in Madison County.
"Everything we bring in goes out to missions, help missionaries buy vehicles, Sunday School material, help plant churches," said Youth Pastor of Madison Assembly of God, Chad Owens.
For two weeks every year for the past 15 years, the church's Fourth of July mission has been to help others.
"I think we're actually ahead of last year in sales and stuff so it's been a good year," said Owens.
For the many of you who will be playing with fireworks this holiday, make sure you go about it responsibly.
And don't forget to celebrate the land of the free.
"I love you America," exclaimed Harris.
Many stores will keep shop open on July 5th.
