COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - An update to a story about a series of deadly crashes on a dangerous corridor in the Colbert County. Plans for more improvements are coming to highway 43 in the Littleville area.
Now the plans for guard rails and road resurfacing are next on the agenda, and WAFF 48 News was able to get a quick glimpse of some of ALDOT's plans.
Improvements come quickly to a corridor that's seen it's share of fatalities in past months. Daniel Speegle lives off highway 43 and knows the conditions first hand.
"It's pretty unsafe, I try to keep my speed down going through there," he said.
ALDOT changed the speed limit from 65-to 55 last month after a series of wrecks.
In the last week of March, a driver and her 14-year-old son were killed after there car went off the road.
An accident that set off a series of others to follow.
Two days later-- another teenager was killed when he was struck by a vehicle, and that was later followed by another deadly accident where the driver crossed the median.
ALDOT's plans for round two of improvements now include: a center guard rail and road resurfacing to make driving conditions more favorable when it's wet.
"It will really help out a whole lot. Just the guard rails in case somebody slides through there and they hit a slick spot it will keep them from going off in a ditch or anything," Littleville resident Speegle said.
A safety pre-caution Colbert County Commissioner Creekmore says may lessen fatalities.
"The object here is to improve the safety of the road and save lives, although the road can't be accident proof, we do hope these efforts will improve safety tremendously," Creekmore said.
Safer for drivers, and residents who've seen first hand how dangerous this corridor can be.
Bids for both the resurfacing and guard rail project are scheduled for the end of this month.
