Lauderdale County roads underwater

LEXINGTON, AL (WAFF)  Several county roads in Lauderdale County are flooded after heavy rains over the weekend.  Emergency workers want to remind residents to avoid these roads until the water subsides.

It is not a surprise Lauderdale County Road 502 in Lexington has flooded.  Second Creek crosses the road there, and with heavy rains the creek rises with a very swift current.

Mildred Hill has lived on the road for more than 30 years.

"Not every time, but when it's a heavy rain," said Hill. "When it floods in Tennessee, it floods here."

Road department workers put signs out to prevent drivers from coming close.  Hill had a warning for drivers.

"Do not go across," warned Hill. "They'll be swept away."

Most of the flooded roads are in very rural areas.

"We have had people who have tried to cross the road up here when it flooded real bad at night," said Lexington Police Chief Augie Hendershot. "Actually got swept away."

Hendershot said he patrols the roads that are flooded to make sure drivers stay away.  At night many drivers cannot see how deep the water actually is.

"People need to realize how dangerous it really is," Hendershot said.

He also has to make sure children do not play in the flooded roads.

"When it floods a lot of children like to get out there and ride 4-wheelers," said Hendershot, "They don't realize how dangerous it is."

It only takes a few feet of water to take control of a vehicle.  In this part of Lauderdale County there are not many people around to help.  Also, cell phone service is iffy.

Hendershot's advice:  Don't go past the "Road Closed" signs.

Along with Lexington, there are roads closed in Anderson and Rogersville.  The following Lauderdale County Roads are closed: 502, 534, 156, 96, and 379.  Turner Lindsey Road in Rogersville is also closed.
