HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Tips from the community helped bust a man Huntsville police say has been stealing checks and transposing the victims’ account numbers onto counterfeit checks to get money.
Matthew Beavers has been arrested and faces a number of charges, including identity theft, theft of property, theft by deception, and criminal possession of a forged instrument.
Officials say their investigation into Beavers has expanded and several cases have now been pinned on him.
“We’re pretty confident that what he was doing was getting information off of individual mail from at least one of the victims and would take that information from checking accounts and put that information onto counterfeit checks he was creating. He was going into the victims’ mail and instead of using the victims’ checks. He was taking the information off of them and putting his own information on those checks. We got tips called into his location and officers went over and picked him up,” said Lt. Michael Johnson with the Huntsville Police Department.
