Huntsville, other AL cities hit by nationwide ‘hoax’ bomb threats

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Hoax bomb threats have been emailed to businesses around the country. That includes Huntsville and other Alabama cities.

Authorities say these bomb threats have been traced to a Russian internet address.

Huntsville police say they are investigating as a precaution but do not believe the public is in any danger. The department write in a tweet: “@FBI is aware of this hoax. We are now aware that LE agencies in other states are also reeving reports. You can also report the threat to the FBI internet crime complaint center.”

The bomb threats demand payment of bitcoin, but again, it’s believed to be a hoax and there is no danger.

Similar bomb threats have been reported around the country.

The FBI has released a statement regarding the email threats: “We are aware of the recent bomb threats made in cities around the country, and we remain in touch with our law enforcement partners to provide assistance. As always, we encourage the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activities which could represent a threat to public safety.”
