ATHENS, AL (WAFF) - Tuesday 65 students in the Valley got to start Christmas early thanks to the Athens fire department and a host of local sponsors.
For the 21st consecutive year, the fire department raised funds from businesses around the Valley. It garnered enough money to give each student a $140 shopping spree at the Athens Walmart, $70 for toys and $70 for essentials.
Counselors from city and county schools recommended the students. Each family was paired with an Athens firefighter on the shopping trip.
Amy Trinkle and her two school-age daughters were among the families selected. The Trinkles moved from Indiana just two months ago after a “hard year.”
“My friend down here offered us a fresh start and I jumped on it, left in three weeks,” she said.
Trinkle said the community has embraced her family, and is very grateful for the shopping spree.
“We’ve never taken part in anything like this before, and it’s an amazing experience,” she said.
“People are awesome. My kids are going to have an awesome Christmas now.”
