REDSTONE ARSENAL, AL (WAFF) - There’s a very festive atmosphere on Redstone Arsenal thanks to the work of many to help bring holiday cheer to the installation!
Families gathered to enjoy the sights and sounds of the holiday season on Monday night.
U.S. Army Installation Management Command’s Garrison Redstone and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center held separate holiday tree lighting ceremonies.
Marshall Associate Director Steve Miley presided over the NASA field center’s celebration. It included a musical performance by children from the Marshall Child Development Center.
Garrison’s event was held at The Summit on Golf Course Road and Garrison Commander Col. Kelsey Smith oversaw the Redstone tree lighting. The shimmering 25-foot-tall tree was decorated by Army MWR staff.
As he addressed the crowd, Colonel Smith encouraged families to remember our soldiers serving around the world this holiday season.
“The beauty of the military community is that we all share a selfless service and a true love for our nation. We understand that our deployed service members and civilians are in harm’s way and this is our opportunity to express our thanks and gratitude to their families and their children. We want to thank them for their sacrifice and gather together as a community with shared love for our country and celebrate together,” he said.
Both events included a Santa’s Workshop and holiday-themed activities. The garrison celebration event also had arts and craft projects for children, prize giveaways and a drop-off site for the U.S. Marines’ Toys for Tots campaign.
