7 charged in theft from mentally ill inmate in Limestone County Jail

LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Seven people are facing charges after allegedly playing a big role in a Limestone County home burglary, and the victim is also behind bars.

The victim has been in jail since July and is still locked up.

Deputy Stephen Young with the Limestone County Sheriff's Office say's the victim is a 57-year-old woman. She allegedly met the mastermind behind the burglary while they were both in jail. They're both still inmates which is why so many people are involved.

37-year-old Monica Gray met the victim at the Limestone County Jail and the two ladies talked and shared stories. Investigators say Gray found out the victim was wealthy and lived on Quinn Road. Deputies say Gray then talked to her boyfriend, Derrick Hicks, when he visited the jail.

Sheriff’s deputies say in addition to the home burglary, tens of thousands of dollars were stolen and two of her vehicles damaged.

Gray and Hicks are just two of the people charged with Theft and burglary. Hicks is also charged with two counts of illegal possession of a credit or debit card.

The seven people arrested so far are as follows:

  • Monica Gray, 37, of Athens is charged with two counts of first-degree theft, third-degree burglary, and conspiracy to commit a controlled substance crime (trafficking). She was already held in the Limestone County Jail at the time of her offenses, and her additional bond on the new charges has not yet been set.
  • Derrick Hicks, 33, of Athens is charged with two counts of first-degree theft, third-degree burglary, and two counts of illegal possession of a credit/debit card. He is held in the Limestone County Jail on $15,500 bond.
  • Bethany West, 33, of Athens is charged with third-degree burglary and three counts of illegal possession of a credit/debit card. She has been released from the Limestone County Jail on $7,000 bond.
  • Christopher Aday, 38, of Lester is charged with third-degree burglary. He has been released from the Limestone County Jail on $2,500 bond.
  • Vincent Scales, 37, of Athens is charged with third-degree burglary. He has been released from the Limestone County Jail on $2,500 bond.
  • Antonio Nelson, 28, of Athens is charged with conspiracy to commit a controlled substance crime (trafficking). He is held in the Limestone County Jail on $12,500 bond.
  • Brandy Johnson, 27, of Elkmont was also been arrested. Her charges are not yet known.

“Essentially what we have in this case is somebody who is in jail, granted they did commit some type of crime, according to the statues, but probably what that person needs is mental health care and those facilities are not readily available here, so she ended up here and therefore ended up victimized by other people in jail, who saw an opportunity to do so,” said Young.

The Limestone County Sheriff’s Office are still investigating this case. They say it’s possible even more people could have been involved and more arrest are likely to be made.
