MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - He’s a well known figure in the City of Hartselle- longtime Police Chief Ron Puckett. Now, he’s gearing up to transition to a new job as sheriff of Morgan County
As Puckett looks back over the years, he has a lot of fond memories from his decades with the department and the strong bonds he's formed in Hartselle, the place where he grew up.
He's been with Hartselle PD for nearly 30 years, starting with the agency in 1989.
"I've worked my up through the ranks from a police officer, to investigator, to sergeant, to captain, and finally in 2005, I was promoted to chief of police for the City of Hartselle," Puckett said.
He’s loved his time with the police department and he is well-liked and well-respected by his officers, residents, city council and the mayors he’s worked for over the years.
"I've been very honored to serve the City of Hartselle as a police officer and for the past 13 years as their police chief because the citizens and those who come to the city love our police department. I've been well received," he stated.
A year ago, he was approached by a number of people who asked him to consider running for Morgan County sheriff. After careful thought and consideration, he decided to go for it to have the chance to serve the entire county.
“It was a huge decision because I love where I work and the people I work with, but I just felt a calling to serve at a higher level. God honored that and we won the election,” Puckett said.
He takes office in January. Puckett is looking forward to the change in his life as he heads to the sheriff’s office. First up, he’ll be addressing personnel and naming a chief deputy.
“Certainly, you want to come in and organize the sheriff’s office the way you would like to see it run,” he added.
Puckett says this new chapter of his career will center around staying grounded and doing the right thing.
"Those deputies that serve our community, those jailers that serve our community- we are all servants of this community. And that's how we are going to approach this new era, a fresh start. We want to serve and protect those in this county," he explained.
Hartselle PD will be honoring Chief Puckett's decades of service and leadership with a celebration Monday, November 26 from 4-6 p.m. at the Hartselle Civic Center.
“I am a really blessed man... I look forward to serving with an honorable service to our community as sheriff. I want to bring honor to the office and to the citizens of Morgan County,” Puckett stated.
