Holiday thieves get early start on thefts from Albertville porches

ALBERTVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Albertville police are warning residents to beware of porch pirates stealing early holiday gifts.

Albertville police say they had this problem last year but they caught them. This year they’ve already had three packages taken in less than a week.

Albertville police say thieves are striking and it isn't even Thanksgiving yet. They're targeting porches where packages are left by mail carriers. Chief Jamie Smith says the thefts haven't been in any particular area so anyone can become a victim. Black Friday is coming which kicks off the official Christmas buying season. If you are buying online police advise you to take extra precautions making purchases and waiting for that present to arrive by mail.

“Protect yourself as best you can. Have things delivered to a trusted neighbor, have them dropped at your work if that’s allowable, set a delivery time with a delivery company when somebody will be there and can take the packages,” said Smith.

Police say it never hurts to have your neighbors keep watch of your property and call police if they see anything suspicious
