The Veterans Week Planning Committee, in consultation with the City of Huntsville, local Veterans Organizations and Redstone Arsenal have determined that it is in the best interest of the citizens of Huntsville and Madison County to cancel the 2018 Veterans Parade that was scheduled to be held in Huntsville, Alabama on Monday, 12 Nov 2018, 11:00 AM.
The forecast for Monday, November 12th, is not encouraging, Cold, light rain is expected in the morning and heavier rain, at the 11am start time, is forecast and expected to continue into the evening. Temperatures will be in the 40’s.
Extensive and prolonged discussions took place today (Saturday) weighing options and looking at alternatives, but cancellation due to inclement weather appears to be the most sensible option.
We understand that bands and museums cannot bring their expensive equipment in inclement weather and our contracted audio and visual assets are at risk in the rain.
But most of all, we know that many children as well as elderly Veterans may suffer ill health by being out in the cold and rain for the Parade. This cancellation extends to all pre-Parade events that were to take place in Veterans Memorial Park on Monroe Street from 10 – 11 AM.
VETERANS PARADE BREAKFAST: For people who have already bought tickets (or otherwise personally invited) to the Veterans Breakfast to honor our Blue Star and Gold Star families, the Breakfast WILL CONTINUE AS PLANNED at the Roundhouse Depot on Monday morning. This is a sold-out indoor, pre-paid event, for ticket-holders only.
VETERANS MEMORIAL MUSEUM: The U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum at 2060 Airport Road SW, will be Open on Monday from 10 am – 4 pm. For more information, visit www.memorialmuseum.org
